Images August 8 - September 19, 2025 SUN VALLEY, IDAHO OCHI is pleased to present Scenes and Images, an exhibition of new works by New York-based artist Benjamin Langford. This marks Langford’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Scenes and Images will be on view at OCHI, located at 119 Lewis Street in Ketchum, Idaho from August 8 through September 19, 2025. In Scenes and Images, Langford presents a body of work that hybridizes painting and photography to explore the idea of nature after the death of nature. The artist’s photographs–from dioramas and zoos to arboretums and butterfly pavilions–serve as the basis for the paintings on view. Reflecting on constructed environments shaped by our idealized projections, Langford reveals vestigial fantasies of the natural world. In his analytic and anthropologically-charged landscapes, Langford references the romanticism of the Hudson River School and the soft-focus mystique of pictorialist photography. In works like Twilight (2024), the grand pastoral view recedes like a theatrical backdrop, while tangled branches overtake the foreground – a reversal of the classic frontier gaze, where the sublime is now elusive, distant, and inaccessible. Utilizing photographs, printed on canvas to serve as underpaintings, Langford paints into the landscapes, muddying the fidelity of these idyll worlds. Beneath the beauty of these constructions lies a quiet mourning—for the loss of unfiltered connection and the erosion of awe in a world increasingly flattened by mediation. Yet the works resist cynicism, seeking to re-enchant, to reclaim feeling even within the artificial. The exhibition features a series of floral wall works depicting species from ranunculus to carnation, alongside a multiply-mediated sunset landscape. Engaging photography, embroidery, sculpture, and painting, Langford investigates how the tools we use to depict the natural world shape our aesthetic and affective experience of it. Langford’s process begins with meticulously photographing each flower, capturing hundreds of images at varying focal distances. These are composited into a single, hyper-detailed image, with each petal printed on an individual piece of canvas. The artist then stitches these sections together, reconstructing the flower as a draped, dimensional form suspended from the wall by nails. To further enhance their three-dimensional presence, Langford hand-paints the backs of the canvases. The resulting works exist in a space between illusion and physicality—at once hyperreal in their precision and distinctly object-like in their construction. By shifting scale and perspective, Langford amplifies the natural allure of flowers—the same visual strategies that attract bees now drawing in the human eye. This exploration of visual seduction leads to a broader inquiry: how does technological mediation alter our experience of the organic? And to what extent is perception itself a constructed, rather than innate, phenomenon? Langford’s engagement with these questions draws from the history of scientific photography, particularly the early 20th-century work of Karl Blossfeldt, who sought to distill botanical structures into archetypal design forms. Langford similarly invokes an “inhuman eye”—a vision beyond human limitations that captures microscopic detail and reconstructs nature through mechanical precision. Yet, by merging this forensic gaze with tactile, handmade processes, he reimagines botanical illustration through a sculptural lens, expanding its ability to translate nature’s complexity into aesthetic form. A key work in the exhibition, installed in the gallery’s office, extends these inquiries by offering a conceptual counterpoint to the floral wall works. Using a photograph Langford took at the Museum of Natural History as a starting point, this rectangular work depicts a fabricated flower within an artificial landscape. Its hand-painted surface further blurs the boundary between real and simulated nature, underscoring how representation not only mediates but also constructs our perception of the natural world. Throughout, Langford’s work expands the idea of the sublime—traditionally tied to nature’s awe-inspiring vastness—by demonstrating how mediated images can evoke the same sense of wonder and transcendence once associated with direct encounters. notice flowers.” - Andy Warhol&nbsp; &nbsp; Benjamin Langford’s solo exhibition, Flowers, presents ten new monumental wallworks. The works are comprised of several photographically printed canvas panels, stitched together with waxed thread. At a towering scale, ten feet tall and wide, the flowers hover in seeming defiance of gravity, draped delicately on pins in slight sculptural repose. When shooting the floral source material, Langford uses focus-stacking, a process native to commercial product photography in which layers of multiple exposures render the flowers in exquisite detail. Controlled studio lighting acts to replicate the way light and shadow exist in the space of the gallery–blurring the distinction between depicted space and physical reality. Approaching these works, one experiences a sweeping shift in perspective. Ensconced in their vibrant glow and hallucinatory texture, one sees no longer as a human but rather as a bee: a vector of primal desire. The flowers seem to seduce overtly, their sex organs beckon and our gaze is suddenly that of a pollinator. As peripheral awareness dissolves, the sculptures melt into a field of pure optic experience. The petals pulse like the capillaries on your outstretched palm at the precise moment when the acid hits. Langford’s flowers provide a precarious kind of purity. They are meticulous hyper-representations, ostensibly reveling in nothing but their own innate being. However, upon close inspection, the objects begin to unravel, as the physics of the image, light through a lens, fractures into a melange of painterly abstraction. Tonguing a technological threshold, the flowers test the limits of a machine’s capacity to articulate reality. Larger-than-life, their seductive forms whisper softly of our bifurcate desires: our dream to possess the world and the longing be crushed beneath its heel. Benjamin Langford (b. 1992, CT) lives and works in New York City and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2014. Omaha, NE 68108 Press Release: Benjamin Langford’s photographs tremble with ecstatic intricacy - detailed enough to overwhelm yet tempered by compositions staid and still. At turns both unremarkably familiar and breathtakingly theatrical, they toe the slippery threshold between the sublime and the mundane. The scenes lie in a third state, precariously animated with all the warmth of the newly dead, petrified by the cold, hollow breath of the barely living. This mortal fixation, both of photography’s life in amber and the dialectical space of still life painting, is reflected in the distanced gaze of Langford’s images. In “Snow Day (Prospect Park)” we find the joy and romance of the ideal snow day, complete with towering, transcendent clouds. The trees’ barren, lifeless limbs extend while a listless, wandering lot delectate amidst a winter wonderland. Within this frozen snowscape lies the truth of such a passing idyll: the familiar rush of excitement to be free of school, of work, of responsibility, the chance to rend a snowman from ground of white. Its majestic, painterly visage is imbued with a sense of history, a lineage of affection and shared social community: we have seen this sight before on countless museum walls, on postcards and in-mail promotional calendars. The innate, understood feeling the image evokes is inextricable from the commonness of its reproduction and yet no less meaningful for its incessant dispersion. The hallucinatory optic field of “Spring” signals both a turning of the season and a perceptual shift from distant observer to the more immediate vantage of a passerby on an afternoon stroll. Still-green buds crashing like an Impressionist painting upon the rippled mirror lake blur one’s spatial reason. Behind this cloak of flowers-in-becoming, a fallen tree branch, desiccated yet ripe with moss, rises from the water. Ascending like Lazarus from within the dappled plane of swirling foliage, the photograph appears as interested with the arrival of new life as it is concerned with the persistence of dead matter. In contrast to the exuberant, first-person perspective of “Spring’s” mis-en-scene, the stoic rigor of “Japanese Garden (Montréal)” frames a detached, analytic space of quiet reverie. A family finds pause for reflection as a young boy stands aloft a rock, chasing his image in an artificial pond. The Stade Olympique, former home to the 1976 Olympic Games, juts into the sky, a modernist shell conceived for a temporary spectacle. One wonders if the impetus for such a grand and immediately obsolete superstructure is related to our seeming need to fashion endless monuments to Nature. Building meticulous sanctuaries for the preservation of the natural splendor beyond is perhaps as much to satisfy our wanton longing as it is an effort to rectify our lack of access, our inability to appreciate an untouched world. We build architectures to grant us permission to return, craft images to serve as polished guides. Photographs have an uncanny capacity to unsheathe our idealizations and to reveal representation’s infringement upon the real. In both “Seascape” and “Yose-Ue (Forest Style)” we find our collective desire for the spectacle of illusion on view in complimentary fashion. In the former, there is a Truman Show of sublime theatre. A life-size rocky tableau sits before a monumental landscape photograph, lending credibility to the illusion while highlighting the material limitations of its fantasy. In the latter we find a modest bonsai tree photographed dramatically, as though in nature. Only the muted, geometric shadows in the back- ground dim the lights on this diminutive stage. Bonsai is an art of self-aware seduction. We know their lives are meticulously rendered with sinewy branches and gnarled, gravity-arched forms bent, twisted, lashed and pulled, bound by the will of a patient aesthete. The fastidious craft is the line, their charming aura of reality the lure. The catch, however, is the space such tiny triumphs conjure, the opening for an appreciation of just such a tree when found in the wild, a proxy to reapproach beauty beyond our willful imaginings. The title “Yose-Ue (Forest Style)” seems to say it all: we are searching for the ideal of the forest through the representation of the trees. Plants from disparate lands find themselves tightly intertwined. Amidst the subtle drone of spinning fans you will not hear the songs of birds or chirps of insects. Yet, an otherworldly light peeks between the branches through a grid of steel and glass. The light gives life to these places-- glimmering in from another world. &nbsp; &nbsp; These works, made from a combination of digital printing and hand-painting on raw linen explore the greenhouse as a metaphoric space. One that flutters between sublime wilderness and hermetically sealed enclosure. By pairing the natural, old-world materiality of raw linen with the use of digital technologies these works invoke a sense of being misplaced in time: hovering between pre-modern painting traditions and digital imaging.
